Getting Started

Set up 1Retro on your devices in just a few minutes.

Connect to Wi-Fi

Connect to Wi-Fi from muOS’s settings. Syncing needs a network connection.

Install the 1Retro app

Download 1RetroSync.muxapp from the latest release and copy it into the ARCHIVE folder at the top of your SD card (make the folder if it is not there). On the device, open Applications, then Archive Manager, and pick 1RetroSync to install it. 1Retro Sync then shows up in Applications.

Pair your device

Open 1Retro Sync from Applications. The first time, the screen shows a QR code next to a 4-character code and a device ID. Scan the QR code with your phone, or go to 1retro.com/device in any browser and type in the device ID. Log in to your 1Retro account, type the 4-character code, and approve. Press B to back out instead.

Sync your saves

Once paired, the app opens on a menu with Sync saves already selected, so a sync is one button press, and the screen shows what it is doing as it goes. Turn on Watch for saves to keep syncing in the background after you leave the app. It uses extra battery and only works on Wi-Fi. Start watching at boot picks that up again after a restart, as long as User Init Scripts is turned on in muOS’s Advanced Settings.

Turn off auto-loading save states

Out of the box, muOS saves a state every time you quit a game and loads it the next time you start it. A save state holds its own copy of the game’s save, so when 1Retro brings down a newer save you made on another device, that older state still wins: the game picks up where you left it on this device, writes the older save back within a minute, and the next sync sends it to the cloud as your latest.

If you play the same games on more than one device, turn auto-loading off. Start any game, open RetroArch’s menu, go to Settings, then Saving, and turn off Auto Load State (called Load State Automatically in newer versions of RetroArch). muOS does not keep RetroArch settings when you quit, so then go to Main Menu, Configuration File, Save Current Configuration. Your in-game saves sync either way; this only stops an old state from undoing them. Earlier versions of a save stay in the cloud if one does get overwritten.

Good to know

  • muOS keeps each emulator core's saves in its own folder, and 1Retro works out which game each one belongs to from the ROMs on your card.
  • In-game saves sync. Save states do not.
  • muOS resumes every game from an automatic save state, and a state carries its own copy of the save, so it can win over a newer save synced from another device. Turn auto-loading off if you play the same game on more than one device.
  • Games muOS runs with a standalone emulator, like DraStic for DS, keep their saves in formats of their own, and those do not sync yet.
